Who is my 1-on-1 coaching meant for?

I work with a wide variety of early- and mid-career academics. The common struggles that I see and can help you with are:

  • You don’t feel like your work is good enough.
  • You procrastinate more often than you would like
  • You see yourself as disorganized and feel like you would benefit from having a system that enables you to get all your work done
  • You’re juggling many different commitments and feel overwhelmed
  • You feel like a fraud and that it’s only a matter of time before everyone finds out
  • You worry excessively about what your colleagues (and possibly also students) think of you
  • You desire more ease in your career and would like to be able to stop thinking about work at the end of the day
1-on-1 coaching

Even though you are currently struggling, who you really are is...

A person with enormous talent and vision who needs a little help accessing their full capacity for confidence, focus, organization, and self-compassion.

You may not completely identify as this person yet, but this is because you’ve internalized punishing and unrealistic social values attached to work, efficiency, and output. To make matters even more challenging, your professional training has further honed your ability to focus on what is problematic and what is lacking. Solving problems is what you do for a living and you cannot seem to stop seeing yourself as a problem that needs to be–but can’t be– solved.

I can help you change your view of who you are and what you are capable of creating.

I can help you get out of your own way and start producing at the level that you are truly able.

How coaching works

I trained and am certified with the Life Coach School, the premier program for causal coaching (causal coaching is focused on finding and working with the root cause of each client’s unique work-related challenges). In addition to my mindset coaching certification, I am an established academic with more than fifteen years of experience in the humanities and social sciences. My approach to coaching combines cognitive and emotional methodologies (including cognitive behavioral therapy) with mindfulness and academic career mentoring.

For those clients seeking more intensive coaching focused on conceiving and developing academic projects, I have additional training. I can help guide you toward a clearer connection to your intellectual and creative instincts, giving you the tools to work through blocks in writing and help clarifying the projects that you feel most called to pursue. And, as a working academic, I act as a supportive (but constructively critical) ear to help you to brainstorm your ideas and see your projects through to completion.

Together, the tools that I provide can help you to transform almost any aspect of your career and life.

Coaching with Teri has allowed me to see the harmful thought and emotion patterns that had been creating mental confusion and taking away my clarity. I can now complete projects with at least 80% less resistance and drama. Coaching has been life-changing. It’s helped bring back the intrinsic joy of writing and working on projects, that childlike sense of fun where I now write solely because I enjoy it.

Frequently asked questions.

Here are some of the more common questions my clients ask me.

Is coaching right for me?

If you desire a better relationship to your career and believe that this is possible then coaching is right for you. The specific areas that I specialize in coaching include stress and overwhelm, procrastination, blocks in writing, productivity, imposter syndrome, confidence, as well as navigating the academy as a woman, person of color, and/or LGBTQI+ individual.

This will depend on whether you thrive most in community or in more focused one-on-one encounters. Some clients prefer to have the support of a group made up of people who are struggling with similar issues, whereas others prefer a program that is tailored to their unique needs and entirely focused on them.

Many therapy modalities focus on developing greater awareness of how your past has contributed to your current struggles. Coaching, on the other hand, gives you the tools to move permanently beyond these struggles. As a coach, I work with people who are functional yet looking for help achieving the career goals and life shifts that they desire.

While I mainly work with academics in all fields, my coaching approach is also effective for clients who are PhDs working in other fields.

I work one-on-one with clients of all backgrounds. The group coaching program, however, is reserved for clients who identify as either female or non-binary.
